The High Court has ordered the reinstatement of Amartya Roy’s candidacy for the vice president (VP) post in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (Jucsu) election.

A bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Mia and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order today (9 September), confirmed Amartya’s lawyer Manjur Al Matin.

Following the order, Shishir Manir, the lawyer for Jahangirnagar University, told TBS that they have filed an appeal with the Chamber Court to seek a stay against the High Court order.

“The hearing will take place this afternoon,” he added.

Regarding the reinstatement of his candidacy, Amartya Roy told TBS, “Today, the High Court has instructed to reinstate my candidacy. Today is the last day of the Jucsu election campaign, and the dope test is also underway. I will return to campus and start campaigning again.”

Amartya Roy John, a VP candidate from the Sampritir Oikya panel, had been disqualified and excluded from the voters’ list published on the university website on Saturday (6 September).

The move came a week after the Election Commission released the final list of candidates on 29 August, which confirmed 179 contenders for various posts, including 10 for VP.

According to the notice, Amartya was deemed ineligible to contest or vote under the Jucsu constitution as he is not a regular student.

The Jucsu constitution states that only regular and valid students of the university are eligible to vote and run in the polls.

Following the notice, Amartya filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking the reinstatement of his candidacy yesterday (8 September).
