The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earlier relieved M Nazmul Islam of his role as head of the finance committee following a series of controversial remarks. The decision was taken in the face of strong protests from cricketers. He has now been reinstated in charge of the board’s finance department.

Nazmul attended the BCB board of directors’ meeting yesterday, where the responsibility of the finance department was formally returned to him. The matter has been confirmed by BCB sources. Speaking to the media after the meeting, BCB media committee chairman Amzad Hossain said, “The issue of accountability that was raised with M Nazmul Islam—meaning the show-cause notice issued by the board—was submitted by him to the disciplinary committee. I believe the BCB disciplinary department issued a statement at some point saying that his response was satisfactory.”

Nazmul Islam had come under heavy criticism from players after making controversial comments, including calling Tamim Iqbal a ‘proven Indian agent’ and demanding money back from cricketers. In response, the president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), Mohammad Mithun, demanded Nazmul’s resignation.

Following this, Mohammad Mithun, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz boycotted the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on 15 January. The BCB immediately issued Nazmul a show-cause notice, asking him to submit a written explanation within 48 hours. Board sources later confirmed that his written reply had been received.

According to the BCB constitution, the board does not have the authority to remove an elected director. A director is elected for a four-year term, and the position can only be declared vacant in specific circumstances—such as death, loss of mental capacity, disciplinary punishment, financial insolvency, or absence from three consecutive board meetings. Having been temporarily relieved of his role as head of the finance department, Nazmul regained his position yesterday.
