According to The New York Times, Spielberg is among only a few directors to ever achieve the distinction, joining figures such as John Gielgud and Mike Nichols. In total, just 22 artists have completed the EGOT, including Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno, Mel Brooks and Elton John.

Spielberg first won an Oscar in 1994 for Schindler’s List, taking home awards for Best Picture and Best Director. He received his first Emmy in 1996 for Pinky and the Brain Christmas and added a Tony in 2022 as a producer of the Broadway musical A Strange Loop. The Grammy, awarded in 2026, finalized his EGOT status. The term “EGOT” dates back to the 1980s but gained widespread recognition through the television series 30 Rock. While some artists pursue the goal intentionally, many EGOT winners say the achievement is less a strategy than a byproduct of long, multifaceted careers Spielberg’s milestone underscores that idea: a decades-spanning body of work across film, television, music and theater culminating in one of entertainment’s rarest honors.
