The bills were passed on Sunday after the Minister of Public Administration placed them before parliament, with ruling party lawmakers endorsing the proposals through a voice vote.

Under the newly passed legislation, the 32-year age limit will apply to direct recruitment across government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory bodies, and public non-financial corporations. The ordinance regarding this change had previously been issued on November 18, 2024, and has now been formally enacted into law.

Reacting to the passage of the bill, the ruling party’s chief whip noted that increasing the job entry age limit was a key demand of the July আন্দোলন (movement), adding that the government has now fulfilled that demand.

Meanwhile, the amendment to the public service ordinance introduces a new definition of “misconduct that disrupts government work.” Under the revised provisions, actions such as disobeying lawful orders from superiors, participating in collective absenteeism without valid reason, or obstructing another public servant from performing their duties will be considered misconduct.

The amendment is aimed at maintaining discipline within public service and preventing disorder or non-compliance, particularly in the context of employee movements and protests. It also replaces previous disciplinary provisions and introduces adjustments to investigation procedures prior to punitive action.
