Brac University celebrates International Day of the Midwife 2026
Brac University marked the International Day of the Midwife 2026 on 5 May with a series of events to strengthen awareness and understanding of the vital role of midwives in advancing quality, respectful and equitable maternity care.
The celebrations were organised by the Midwifery Education Programme of the Brac James P Grant School of Public Health under the global theme “One Million More Midwives”, highlighting the estimated workforce required worldwide to meet essential healthcare needs.
The day began with a vibrant procession through Mohammadpur and Shyamoli, followed by a cultural programme at the Midwifery Education Programme’s academic site in Adabor.
The programme featured performances, including a drama, to showcase the importance of midwifery in maternal and newborn health.
As part of the observance, an awareness session was held on 4 May at T&T Adarsha Mohila College in Mohakhali to promote health consciousness among students.
The session focused on maternal health, newborn care and preventive healthcare practices.
A capping ceremony was also organised for students of the programme’s 12th batch, symbolising their readiness to undertake clinical responsibilities and marking an important milestone in their professional journey.
Addressing the event, Midwifery Education and Nursing Programme Director Dr Sharmina Rahman emphasised the significance of the midwifery profession, noting both its challenges and future potential.
She said strengthening midwifery education and professional capacity can play a crucial role in improving maternal healthcare services in Bangladesh.
Mohammadpur Fertility Services and Training Centre representative Parvin Sultana underscored the importance of hands-on training.
She said practical experience equips students to respond effectively to real-life challenges, contributing to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality.
