Elba, 53, best known for starring roles in series such as The Wire and Luther, was made a Knight Bachelor in recognition of his extensive services to young people and community empowerment. The investiture on 2 June 2026 saw the King confer the title in a traditional ceremony in the castle’s historic surrounds.

Aside from his acting career, Elba has championed youth initiatives through the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, Sabrina Elba, in 2022 to promote education, empowerment and sustainable development for marginalised communities.

The honour carries personal significance for Elba: as a teenager he benefited from a grant from The Prince’s Trust — now The King’s Trust — which helped launch his early drama training, a connection he has previously described as pivotal in his career.

Photos shared by the Royal Family and the actor show Elba kneeling before the King as he received the accolade. Taking to social media, Elba said he was “thankful” and that “the work continues,” highlighting his commitment to both artistic and philanthropic endeavours.

Elba was among 68 individuals recognised at the ceremony, which also honoured figures from sport, comedy and charity work, including Olympic ice-skating legends and celebrated performers
