University of Dhaka wins national moot court competition on international humanitarian law
The University of Dhaka emerged as champions of the 4th Professor Dr Khabir Uddin Ahmed National Moot Court Competition 2026, outperforming leading law schools from across the country in a contest focused on legal research, advocacy, and courtroom skills.
The two-day national competition, held at the Faculty of Law of University of Chittagong, centred on issues related to International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
The winning team from the University of Dhaka Faculty of Law comprised Jannawatul Mawa Suchi, Zaid Ekram, and Nafisah Tabassum. They secured the championship trophy after advancing through multiple rounds of competition. The final round was judged by a distinguished panel that included justices from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Organised by the Society for Critical Legal Studies, this year’s competition attracted 63 teams from 42 public and private universities, marking the highest level of participation in the event’s history.
The tournament consisted of both written and oral advocacy stages. Teams were initially assessed through their written memorials, with only the top 16 teams advancing to the oral rounds held in Chittagong, which began on 6 June.
The University of Dhaka team progressed through the preliminary, quarter-final, and semi-final rounds before claiming victory in the grand final.
Organisers and legal experts noted that the annual competition has become an important platform for assessing the analytical, research, and advocacy skills of aspiring legal professionals. They added that the event continues to play a significant role in developing future lawyers by exposing students to complex legal issues and courtroom-style argumentation.
