Neymar ruled out of Brazil’s World Cup opener, says Ancelotti

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will miss the team’s opening World Cup match against Morocco on Saturday as he continues to recover from a calf injury.

The 34-year-old forward has yet to return to full training, with Ancelotti saying he is expected to rejoin the squad next week. His availability for Brazil’s second group-stage match against Haiti on 20 June therefore remains uncertain.

Brazil will conclude their group campaign against Scotland on 24 June.

“Neymar is working very hard to recover as quickly as possible,” Ancelotti said. “The expectation is that he will recover and rejoin the group next week. When we call up Neymar, we do so not only because of his unquestionable technical quality, but also because of his experience and the example he can set for the younger players in the squad.”

Neymar has not featured for Brazil since 2023 due to a series of injury setbacks. Despite his limited recent involvement, he was included in the World Cup squad ahead of Chelsea striker Joao Pedro and Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison.

The Santos forward is Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, having scored 79 goals in 128 appearances for the national team, surpassing Pele’s record of 77 goals.

If he returns during the tournament, Neymar could feature at a fourth World Cup, having previously represented Brazil at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.
