New Zealand cricket great Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing an end to a distinguished 16-year career representing the Black Caps.
In a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, the former captain said the decision followed a period of careful reflection.
“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time,” Williamson said.
“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.
“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms.”
Williamson also expressed confidence in the future of the national side, praising the depth of talent within the current squad.
“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team. It’s a team I love, and it will always be dear to my heart.”
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest batters and leaders, Williamson captained the side to back-to-back ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup finals, including the dramatic 2019 final. He also led the Black Caps to their first major global title, lifting the ICC World Test Championship mace in 2021.
Williamson’s retirement means he will take no further part in New Zealand’s ongoing series against England. New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that a replacement for the WTC series squad will be named in due course.
