The long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been fuelled by secrecy, speculation and an almost obsessive appetite for new information. Now, with Rockstar Games preparing to reveal more about the highly anticipated title, a series of apparent leaks has threatened to steal some of the spotlight.

More than 18 months have passed since the last GTA 6 trailer. Rockstar recently announced that it would finally give fans a new “extended look” at the game through a Netflix special.

Instead, footage apparently showing the unfinished game has begun circulating online ahead of the planned preview.

Rockstar has yet to publicly comment on the leaked material. However, the footage appears credible enough for Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, to take legal action.

The company filed a case in a New York court on Friday seeking information from Microsoft-owned GitHub and messaging platform Discord about accounts allegedly involved in distributing copyrighted GTA 6 material.

Several copies of the leaked clips have already been removed following copyright complaints, while accounts claiming to be connected to the hackers have also vanished.

For a company that has built its reputation around secrecy, the incident might appear disastrous. But industry observers believe the damage may be considerably smaller than the initial reaction suggests.

Rockstar’s obsession with secrecy

Obbe Vermeij, who served as a technical director at Rockstar and worked on GTA 3, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas before leaving the company in 2009, says keeping games secret was deeply embedded in Rockstar’s culture.

He believes the secrecy helped make the eventual release of its games feel more special.

According to Vermeij, Rockstar wanted players to know as little as possible before launch so that discovering the game for themselves would be part of the experience.

The challenge is much greater with GTA 6.

Rockstar’s modern games are far larger and more complicated than its earlier titles, requiring thousands of developers and years of work.

“It’s amazing that they can keep things under wraps as well as they do,” Vermeij said.

But that secrecy has also created enormous curiosity around GTA 6, meaning even the smallest hint can trigger intense speculation.

A painful leak for developers

Wesley Yin-Poole, director of news at IGN, said the leaks are likely to have been particularly difficult for the people who have spent years working on the game.

“GTA 6 is an enormous endeavour,” he said, noting that the title has effectively been in development for about a decade with thousands of people involved.

Having unfinished work exposed to the public can be devastating for developers, particularly when a project has been kept secret for so long.

The people claiming responsibility for the leaks, however, say they are doing it for players.

The group has accused Rockstar of anti-consumer behaviour, including its reported decision not to release a physical disc version of GTA 6 at launch.

That explanation has not convinced everyone.

Each new release of alleged GTA 6 material has reportedly been accompanied by requests for cryptocurrency donations. Stop Killing Games, a campaign against all-digital distribution, has described the leaks as “destructive” and urged people not to financially support those claiming responsibility.

Yin-Poole said there is widespread doubt about the group’s stated motives.

“Most people believe this is about money,” he said.

Why fans are so desperate for GTA 6 news

The leaks have arrived after a long period in which official information about GTA 6 has been scarce.

Rockstar has released only two trailers so far, with the latest arriving in May 2025. Since then, fans have scrutinised almost every Rockstar post for clues about the game.

That speculation has occasionally reached extraordinary levels.

One theory, for example, claimed that a moon image included in a GTA Online promotional post contained a hidden clue about when GTA 6’s first trailer would be released.

Vermeij believes Rockstar’s secretive approach has contributed to this phenomenon.

“To a certain extent, Rockstar has themselves to blame,” he said.

While he believes the company’s strategy is effective and exciting, he acknowledged that it also means even minor pieces of information can become the subject of enormous speculation.

Will the leaks actually hurt GTA 6?

Despite the controversy, Yin-Poole does not believe the leaks will significantly damage GTA 6’s chances of becoming a massive success.

Fans may recognise that the leaked footage does not represent the way Rockstar wanted to introduce the game. It may also fail to show the title in the polished state in which Rockstar intends players to experience it.

But that is unlikely to matter once official footage arrives and, eventually, players get their hands on the finished product.

Yin-Poole believes most people will simply wait before forming an opinion.

He also doubts the leaks will derail the game’s commercial or cultural impact.

“GTA 6 will be an unprecedented moment in pop culture history,” he said, suggesting the leak will eventually become little more than a footnote in the game’s development.

Vermeij, who has not watched the latest leaked footage, is even more confident that the controversy will fade.

“I think it will have no impact at all whatsoever,” he said. “People will have forgotten about it by the time the game comes out.”

For now, the leaks are an unwanted headache for Rockstar. But if GTA 6 delivers the blockbuster experience fans have spent years waiting for, the controversy surrounding its development may barely register once the game finally arrives.
