Three theme parks will be built near Paris as part of a €6bn deal between France and Saudi Arabia, including one inspired by the popular Japanese manga franchise Dragon Ball Z.

According to BBC, the parks will be developed near Cergy-Pontoise by Qiddiya Investment Company, part of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Construction is expected to take several years, with no opening date set yet.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the project as a major development for France, comparing its scale with Disneyland Paris. The idea reportedly grew from discussions between Macron and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who share an interest in Japanese comics.

The parks could be built on the former Mirapolis site in Val-d’Oise, which closed 35 years ago. The project is expected to create around 2,000 jobs.

The deal also reflects growing economic ties between France and Saudi Arabia, with both countries expected to sign agreements covering health, transport and energy.

Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in entertainment and tourism as part of efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil.
