Medical services at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SHZMC) Hospital have been disrupted due to interns’ strike following a clash with the relatives of a patient who died there yesterday (1 September).

Yesterday (1 September) night, 12 people were injured in sporadic clashes between the relatives of a patient and interns as a patient identified as Abdul Malek, a resident of Rajapur area in Bogura city, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The deceased’s relatives alleged that he died due to wrong treatment.

An altercation broke out between the relatives and three interns over the death.

At one point, the relatives and outsiders accompanying them allegedly attacked the three interns.

On information, police and hospital authorities went to the spot and brought the situation under control after nearly three hours.

Later, the intern announced an indefinite work abstention from midnight, citing security concerns.

Police arrested six relatives of the deceased patient over their alleged involvement in attacking doctors, said Ibrahim Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station.

Two of the arrestees were Nafiul Islam, convener of Ward No. 18 unit of Bogura city unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and joint convener Pranto.

They are undergoing treatment under police custody at SHZMC Hospital while the other four detainees have been kept in police custody at the police station.
