The Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) will organise a national roundtable on “Responsible Research and Publication in the Humanities” on 1 October, bringing together scholars and academic leaders from universities across Bangladesh.

The invitation-only event will be held from 10am to 12pm at the ULAB campus on 688 Beribadh Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka.

ULAB Vice-Chancellor Professor Shamsad Mortuza will inaugurate the programme, while Dr Abu Saleh Mohammad Rafi, associate professor of the Department of English and Humanities at ULAB, will convene and moderate the discussion.

The roundtable comes amid the expansion of Bangladesh’s research landscape, which has created opportunities for universities and researchers to strengthen their national and international presence while also raising concerns about research quality and integrity, responsible publication, academic mentorship and support for emerging researchers.

The discussion will focus on issues particularly relevant to humanities researchers, including journal selection, peer-review standards, authorship and citation practices, the use of generative AI and changing approaches to research assessment.

Participants include Professor Shaila Sultana of BRAC University; Professor Mohammad Shafiqul Islam of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology; Professor Sarker Hasan Al Zayed of Independent University, Bangladesh; Professor Farzana Yesmen Chowdhury of the University of Chittagong; Qumrul Hasan Chowdhury of the University of Dhaka; Nazia Manzoor of North South University; and Professor Anwar H Joarder, director of ULAB’s Office of Faculty Research.

The organisers said the roundtable aims to provide a platform for scholars and academic leaders to discuss challenges surrounding research and publication and explore ways universities can support meaningful and responsible scholarly work.

They said the initiative is intended to begin a broader national conversation rather than serve as a one-off academic event, with the aim of contributing to stronger, sustainable research cultures and greater dialogue among researchers and academic institutions in Bangladesh.

The initiative is part of ULAB’s continuing efforts to promote academic excellence and integrity and encourage discussion on the future of research and publication in the country.
