Egypt’s Hassan brothers, Zico suspended for criticising World Cup refereeing
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and team manager Ibrahim Hassan have each received three-match suspensions, while forward Mostafa Zico has been banned for five matches by FIFA over their conduct following Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup round of 16.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Monday that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee had imposed the sanctions. The EFA has requested detailed explanations for the decisions and plans to appeal after reviewing the legal aspects.
The suspensions could rule the Hassan brothers out of Egypt’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi in November and a match during the March international window. Zico will remain unavailable until June.
Egypt were eliminated after surrendering a two-goal lead in a tense encounter in Atlanta on 6 July. The Pharaohs were angered by several refereeing decisions, including a disallowed Zico goal and a penalty appeal that was not awarded.
Hossam Hassan accused the officials of injustice after the match, claiming Egypt had been “cheated” out of a place in the quarter-finals. FIFA refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina later defended the officiating, warning that allegations of bias could expose referees and their families to threats.
