After The Silence: Cinemata hosts a powerful screening at DU
The Department of Television, Film and Photography at the University of Dhaka, in collaboration with Cinemata, hosted a thought-provoking film screening titled ‘After the Silence’ on 20 April, 2026, at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium.
Curated by Farhana Farha, the programme featured 12 films from Bangladesh and across Asia, offering a layered exploration of gender-based violence, digital insecurity and structural harassment. Spanning documentary, narrative and experimental forms, the screening foregrounded voices often pushed to the margins, particularly those of women and gender-diverse communities.
Organised around three thematic pillars, Violent Intimacies, Systems of Silence and Breaking Point, the programme examined how silence is produced within both intimate relationships and broader systems of power. From constraints within domestic spaces and violations of consent to the marginalisation of migrant labourers and the trans and hijra community, the films traced the many ways violence operates across personal and political spheres.
The event drew a strong audience, with students from various departments attending the screening and engaging in thoughtful discussions. The space extended beyond viewing, becoming one of shared reflection and dialogue.
A notable highlight was the presence of National Award-winning filmmaker Rezwan Shahriar Shumit, who joined the watch party. His engagement with the programme and interest in exploring Cinemata further added a meaningful dimension to the event, fostering connections between established practitioners and emerging film communities.
More than just a screening, ‘After the Silence’ created a space for listening, questioning and collective engagement. For those unable to attend, the films remain available online via Cinemata, allowing the conversation to continue beyond the auditorium.
