The Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, in collaboration with the Bureau of Economic Research (BER) hosted an international conference on May 9, with the theme of “Sustainable Futures: Ensuring Economic Stability & Inclusive Social Development”.
The conference served as a grand scope for the students to engage with leading scholars, researchers, and practitioners in the field of economics. Participants from different universities, from both home and abroad, attended presentations on a wide range of topics, gaining valuable insights into the latest developments and trends in economics.
The event commenced at 9:30 am at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of the Social Science Building, with a warm welcome from the distinguished faculty and Prof. Dr. Selim Raihan, Director of BER. Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal graced the occasion as the chief guest. Prof. Masuda Yasmeen chaired the proceedings, while Dr. Wahiuddin Mahmud, a renowned economist and former professor of the Economics Department, delivered the keynote address.
The day was full of activities. The conference encompassed three main segments: panel discussions, paper presentations, and a cultural program.
The first panel discussion, focusing on “Macroeconomics and Resilience,” featured esteemed panellists Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Dr. Salim Al Mamun, and Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur. The thought-provoking conversations were equally enjoyed by the students and faculties present at the auditorium.
Following a refreshing lunch break, attendees convened for paper presentations in Economics department’s spacious classrooms. Scholars from diverse backgrounds, both domestic and international, shared their research across seven thematic areas, including Agriculture, Food, and Poverty; Macroeconomic Issues; Education; Health Economics; Banking and Finance; Development Economics; and Environmental Issues. An interactive Question-and-Answer session enriched the discourse.
The day culminated in a dynamic panel discussion on “Inclusive Development,” featuring panellists Dr. Binayak Sen, Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, and Prof. Dr. Niaz Asadullah. The concluding address was given by Dr. Selim Raihan.
At evening, the department’s Economics Cultural Club, organised a lovely cultural program at the auditorium. The action-packed day ended with a conference dinner at 9:30 pm.
