Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) Vice-Chancellor Sheikh Shariful Alam remains confined to his office for nearly a day since yesterday noon (12 October) as teachers, officers, employees and students continue their blockade demanding his resignation.

Demonstrating students locked the VC inside the administrative building around 12:30pm yesterday, demanding his resignation.

The protesting students also reportedly disconnected the electricity supply after locking the entrance.

According to university sources, Dr Mohammad Abdullah, a physician at Cuet’s medical centre, and technologist Basu Deb went to Administrative Building-2 around 1am today (13 October).

The students allowed them to enter after VC Shariful Alam called to request medical assistance.

VC Shariful Islam spoke to journalists later and said doctors and an ambulance had been called after two former students developed complications related to high blood pressure.

He added that others inside the building were also feeling unwell and exhausted after being confined for such a long time.

Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam arrived on campus around 9am yesterday.

After entering through the main gate while identifying himself as a teacher, he broke the lock on the vice-chancellor’s building and entered his office, accompanied by several leaders of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the BNP.

Following the vice-chancellor’s arrival, the protesting students warned him and his associates to leave the building by noon.

They also warned that, otherwise, they would declare the building ‘vacant’, lock its entrance and cut off its electricity and water supplies.

After the deadline passed, the students locked the building’s entrance and disconnected the electricity supply.
