Dhaka University Research Society elects new president and general secretary
The Dhaka University Research Society (DURS), a research-focused student organisation at the University of Dhaka, has elected its new leadership following a competitive and transparent election process.
Humayra Anjir, a 2018–19 student from the Department of Craft under the Faculty of Fine Arts, was elected President, while Md Monowar Hossain (Apon), a 2020–21 student from the Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT), secured the position of General Secretary.
The election took place on Thursday afternoon in a peaceful and orderly environment, overseen by a five-member Election Commission led by the organisation’s Moderator, Professor Dr Mohammad Manjurul Karim of the Department of Microbiology. Other commission members included Dr Mumit Al Rashid, Md Johir Rayhan, outgoing President Fahim Hasan Mahdi, and outgoing General Secretary Shahriar Nazim Simanta.
DURS follows a unique election procedure where candidates first submit nominations, then present their organisational plans, research experience, leadership skills, and future initiatives before voters, the Election Commission, and observers. The final results are determined through a combination of votes and evaluation scores. The full executive committee will be formed later through a selection process.
Founded in 2016 as Bangladesh’s first university student-based research organisation, DURS has been instrumental in fostering a research culture at the undergraduate level. With around 3,000 active members, the society continues to collaborate with national and international research organisations through networking, knowledge exchange, and joint research activities.
