IUB EEE department introduces seminar-based Mega Quiz to strengthen student learning
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), in collaboration with the IEEE IUB Student Branch, organised the EEE Seminar Series 2026 along with its first-ever Mega Quiz Competition, introducing an interactive approach to academic learning.
The initiative combined a series of technical seminars with a knowledge-based competition, encouraging students to apply what they had learned rather than simply attend the sessions. The Mega Quiz Competition offered a total prize pool of BDT 30,000 and was designed to reinforce concepts presented during the seminars through assessment and recognition.
According to the department, the programme reflects its commitment to promoting outcome-based learning by integrating seminars, evaluation and student engagement into a single academic initiative. The initiative was held under the guidance of Professor Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury, head of the Department of EEE, who has encouraged teaching methods that connect classroom learning with emerging technologies and industry applications.
The seminar series covered three contemporary topics. The first session, Micro/Nano Technology: From Silicon MEMS to Nanofluidic Biosensors – A Cleanroom Fabrication Journey, explored microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanotechnology, biosensors and advanced fabrication techniques. The online session was conducted by EEE alumnus Abrar Jawad Haque, currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral researcher in physics at the University of Hamburg, Germany.
The second seminar, Understanding Robotics: Concepts, Applications & Opportunities, introduced participants to robotics, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0 and related career opportunities. The session was delivered by Dr. Kh Shahriya Zaman, assistant professor in the Department of EEE.
The third webinar, A Road to Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters & Scholarship, focused on higher education opportunities abroad, scholarship applications and study preparation. The session was conducted by Mahdi Islam, lecturer in the Department of EEE and an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s graduate.
Following the seminar series, students participated in the Mega Quiz Competition on 25 June. The assessment consisted of concept-based and application-oriented multiple-choice questions drawn entirely from the seminar content, encouraging participants to revisit the materials and deepen their understanding.
The award ceremony featured the publication of results through the IUB Digital Classroom. All participants received certificates of participation, while top performers in each seminar category were recognised for their achievements.
In the Micro/Nano Technology category, Siam Alam secured first place, followed by Abyaz Karim, Mst. Nowshin Jahan and Jannatun Ferdoushi.
In the Robotics category, Kallyen Kumar Tirtho finished first, while Istheak Ahammed, Md. Tanvir Ahsan Ankon and Md. Habibur Rahman secured the remaining top positions.
In the Erasmus Mundus scholarship category, Mst. Nowshin Jahan Borsha claimed first place, followed by Md. Rashedul Islam, Rafiatun Islam and Md. Radwan Kabir.
The event was organised by the IEEE IUB Student Branch under the leadership of its chairperson, Md. Arifur Rahman, with support from student volunteers responsible for planning, examination management and coordination. The department also acknowledged the contribution of EEE alumnus Mosiur Rahman Shadhin for supporting the event’s planning and logistics.
The organisers expressed gratitude to the seminar speakers, faculty members, staff, volunteers and the IEEE IUB Student Branch for their contributions. They said the successful introduction of the seminar-based Mega Quiz Competition has established a new model for student engagement and will become a regular feature of future EEE seminar series at the university.
