IUB DC

The campus of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) recently served as the stage for intense intellectual discourse as the Independent University Bangladesh Debate Club (IUBDC) organised its premier annual intra-open debate tournament, “Debattle 2.0: Clash of Departments”.

Held from 19 to 20 June 2026, the high-stakes, two-day competition was designed to bridge academic divides by drawing out the university’s sharpest minds from varied disciplines. The platform provided a unique opportunity for students to step out of conventional lecture halls and showcase diverse perspectives and rigorous rhetorical styles, successfully fostering a deeper passion for competitive debate across the broader campus community.

Following the inaugural success of Debattle 1.0 in 2025, this year’s iteration saw a significant expansion, officially adopting the competitive Asian Parliamentary format with an Open Break structure. The expansive event mobilised 52 teams comprising more than 156 debaters from 20 distinct academic departments of the university. To ensure international-standard evaluation across four intense preliminary rounds and two decisive knockout rounds, the club convened a panel of 82 accomplished adjudicators, backed by an organising committee of 40 members and 45 student volunteers.

The tournament’s prestige was underscored by the presence of the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yu Aoyagi, who attended as chief guest alongside the faculty leadership of IUB’s School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS). The event also featured a grand homecoming of prominent IUBDC alumni, who returned to support and witness the next generation carry forward the club’s historic legacy.

The competitive journey culminated in an exhilarating series of grand finals on Saturday evening across parallel language segments. In the English Segment, team “The Triple Helix” emerged as the undisputed champions, outlasting the “Geopolitical Security Council”, which secured the runners-up title after a formidable debate. Meanwhile, the fiercely contested Bangla Segment saw team “Unprepared” claim the top honours, leaving “Hyper Mega Kitties” to take home the runners-up trophy.

The high-performing finalists were awarded prestigious institutional trophies alongside cash rewards drawn from a total prize pool of BDT 50,000. The milestone event concluded with an official closing ceremony followed by a celebratory grand dinner, setting a higher benchmark for rhetoric within the institution.
