The programme, titled Training on Sustainable Plastic Waste Management, was jointly organised by the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization Bangladesh, and the Department of Environment, with collaborative support from NEER (NextEra for Environment, Equity & Rights) and the Environment Forum.

Dr Fahmida Khanom, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, attended as the chief guest. The session was chaired by Professor Dr Sohel Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of the university. Md Mazharul Islam, General Secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union, was present as a special guest.

The event drew participation from university administrators, faculty members, researchers, national and international experts from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, students, sanitation workers, and representatives of various campus institutions.

The training addressed the current state of plastic pollution, waste reduction and recycling technologies, sustainable management strategies, and practical campus-based implementation roadmaps. Experts presented effective and realistic solutions, highlighting their feasibility for rapid adoption.

Speakers stressed the need to raise awareness, strengthen institutional initiatives, and develop coordinated action plans to ensure long-term sustainability in plastic waste management.

Held at the university’s Senate Hall, the programme took place in a structured and engaging atmosphere, with active participation and meaningful exchanges of ideas contributing to productive discussions. In the closing session, Proctor Professor Dr A K M Rashidul Alam and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Dr Md Mahfuzur Rahman delivered concluding remarks. Vice President of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union, Abdur Rashid Jitu, also addressed the audience.

The training and seminar were widely regarded as a significant step towards environmental protection and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants expressed a collective commitment to continued collaboration in the future.
