JU students host academic event on 'Think Like a Theorist: Small States Security'
Second-year students of the Department of International Relations (53rd Batch) at Jahangirnagar University organised an academic event titled “Think Like a Theorist: Small States Security” to encourage deeper understanding of security dynamics through the theoretical perspectives of realism and neorealism.
The programme was structured into three segments aimed at combining academic discussion with interactive participation.
The first segment featured an open discussion session where selected students presented research papers on “Small States Security in the Light of Realism and Neorealism”. The presentations encouraged critical thinking and academic exchange among participants.
The second segment included a debate session on the topic, “Which theory can better explain the Iran–USA 2026 war: Realism or Liberalism?” Students participated actively, applying theoretical frameworks to contemporary international issues and demonstrating analytical skills.
The final segment featured a screening of the film “Independence Day”, bringing the programme to a reflective conclusion.
Students from different batches and departments attended the event, contributing to a diverse and interdisciplinary academic environment.
Assistant Professor Md Rashidul Islam Rusel and Lecturer Md Sazzad Hossen attended the programme as guests.
In his remarks, Md Rashidul Islam Rusel appreciated the initiative and said he was pleased to see students successfully connecting International Relations theories from academic studies to contemporary global events through their papers and debate sessions. He also expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue in the future.
Organisers said the event served as a platform for critical thinking, theoretical application and collaborative learning, reflecting the academic enthusiasm and intellectual engagement of students.
