Memorial meeting and prayer held at Comilla University for Khaleda Zia

A memorial meeting and doa mahfil were held at Comilla University (CoU) on Monday to commemorate former Prime Minister and founding stone-laying figure of the university, Begum Khaleda Zia.

The programme took place at 12:00pm in Room 411 of the university’s administrative building, with Proctor Professor Dr Abdul Hakim presiding over the event and Deputy Registrar Mosharraf Hossain conducting it. The programme began with recitation from the Holy Quran.

Among those present as special guests were Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Masuda Kamal, Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Solaiman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Dr Mohammad Sohrab Uddin, Professor Dr M M Shariful Karim of the English Department, along with deans from different faculties, teachers, officers, staff members, and students.

Addressing the gathering, Registrar Professor Dr Anwar Hossain said, “Today we have gathered to remember the nationalist leader, former prime minister, and advocate of the parliamentary system, Begum Khaleda Zia. Her leadership in establishing the rights of the people remains exemplary. The way she conducted politics and provided leadership for the country and its young generation stands as an ideal for us.”

Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Solaiman, in his remarks, said, “We are speaking about a leader who laid the foundation stone of this university. I pray for the eternal peace of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. May Almighty Allah grant her a high place in Jannah. She consistently upheld democratic values and Bangladesh-oriented politics throughout her political life.”

Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Masuda Kamal said, “We are present here today with deep grief and a heavy heart. This memorial meeting is not only an expression of mourning, but also a reflection of our profound emotions. Begum Khaleda Zia is an inseparable name in Bangladesh’s democratic movement. She taught us how personal grief can be transformed into strength to stand beside the people and the nation. We pray for the forgiveness of her soul.”

Presiding over the programme, Proctor Professor Dr Abdul Hakim said, “As a three-time prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia will be remembered for many of her positive contributions. May Allah grant her eternal peace for her good deeds. We should always strive to do good and refrain from wrongdoing. I pray for the forgiveness of her soul.”

Begum Khaleda Zia was admitted to hospital on November 23 after her breathing condition deteriorated. She passed away at Evercare Hospital at 6:00am on December 30, 2025, while undergoing treatment.
