PM pledges policy support for AI, semiconductor and robotics research: Zahir Uddin Swapon
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has pledged policy support to promote research in artificial intelligence, semiconductors and robotics, his Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapon has said, urging young technologists to develop platforms, datasets and programming tailored to Bangladesh’s needs.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the project presentation and closing ceremony of Nippon AI Dojo 2026, held at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) auditorium in Dhaka yesterday (30 September), according to the press release.
Swapon called for greater depth of research and insight in developing locally relevant AI solutions. He said the technology was no longer confined to laboratories and was transforming agriculture, healthcare, education, manufacturing and freelancing.
He highlighted the need to develop AI tools, platforms and datasets suited to local requirements while addressing constraints such as electricity supply, graphics processing unit capacity and the shortage of comprehensive Bangla datasets.
The government would provide policy support, while technology experts needed to develop practical roadmaps and identify specific areas where AI could be applied effectively, he said.
Swapon also praised Japan’s development partnership with Bangladesh and described Nippon AI Dojo 2026 as an important initiative for building young people’s practical AI skills.
UAP, Japan’s Chowa Giken Corporation and AI Samurai Japan jointly organised the programme to enhance young people’s practical and technical skills and strengthen cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan in technology and skills development.
Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shin-ichi attended as the guest of honour. UAP Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sayeed M Ahmed was also present, while UAP Board of Trustees Member Qaiyum Reza Chowdhury chaired the programme.
A highlight of the closing ceremony was the presentation of AI-based projects developed by trainees from BRAC University, North South University and UAP.
The projects demonstrated practical applications of AI, innovative thinking and technology-based approaches to solving real-world problems.
Certificates were distributed among the trainees, while selected participants were recognised for their skills, creativity and contributions during the programme. A team from UAP emerged as the winner of Nippon AI Dojo 2026.
Speakers emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration among educational institutions, industry and international partners to develop skilled professionals in AI and other emerging technologies.
The organisers said the programme equipped participants with practical AI knowledge and skills while creating opportunities for technology cooperation, skills development and knowledge exchange between Bangladesh and Japan.
UAP trustees, faculty members, officials, students and representatives of the participating organisations attended the event.
