ULAB launches faculty training series on AI in higher education

Held on the ULAB campus, the initiative aims to support faculty members in effectively integrating AI into teaching, learning, and academic practice. The programme was inaugurated by ULAB Vice Chancellor Shamsad Mortuza, PhD, and drew more than 30 academics from across the university.

Addressing participants, Professor Mortuza underscored the importance of preserving human agency in the age of AI. “We need to keep our human agency alive. We cannot become slaves to AI; we have to remain masters of it,” he said, while encouraging faculty to adapt to the rapidly evolving educational landscape.

The first session, titled Teaching with AI: pedagogical shifts, possibilities, and challenges in higher education, was facilitated by Iram Mehrin, Senior Lecturer at the Center for Language Studies (CLS). The session examined how artificial intelligence is reshaping higher education, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with classroom use.

An interactive “Fact vs Myth” Kahoot game introduced key AI concepts and common misconceptions. The session also featured demonstrations of generative AI tools, comparisons between Claude and NotebookLM, and practical applications of prompt engineering. Faculty members actively engaged in discussions and shared perspectives on the future of AI in education.

The training series will continue over the next three weeks, with upcoming sessions focusing on AI-powered educational tools, academic content and media production, and the future of higher education, including learning analytics, intelligent academic ecosystems, research, academic writing, and publication.
