The Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) will organise a national roundtable on “Responsible Research and Publication in the Humanities” on 1 October, 2026, bringing together scholars and academic leaders from universities across Bangladesh.

The invitation-only discussion will run from 10am to noon at the university’s campus at 688 Beribadh Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka, according to the press release.

ULAB Vice-Chancellor Professor Shamsad Mortuza will inaugurate the programme. Dr Abu Saleh Mohammad Rafi, associate professor in the Department of English and Humanities, will convene and moderate the discussion.

The roundtable comes amid considerable growth in Bangladesh’s research landscape, which has created opportunities for universities and researchers to strengthen their national and international research presence.

The organisers said this expansion had also drawn renewed attention to research quality and integrity, responsible publication practices, academic mentorship, publication incentives and support for emerging researchers.

These issues are particularly relevant to the humanities, where researchers increasingly navigate complex publication environments. Challenges include journal selection, peer-review standards, authorship and citation practices, emerging uses of generative artificial intelligence and changing approaches to research assessment.

The roundtable aims to provide a platform for scholars and academic leaders to discuss these challenges and explore how universities can encourage meaningful scholarly contributions while helping researchers make informed and responsible decisions about research and publication.

The discussants include Brac University Professor Shaila Sultana; Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Dr Mohammad Shafiqul Islam; Independent University, Bangladesh Professor Dr Sarker Hasan Al Zayed; and University of Chittagong Professor Dr Farzana Yesmen Chowdhury.

Dr Qumrul Hasan Chowdhury of the University of Dhaka, Dr Nazia Manzoor of North South University and ULAB Office of Faculty Research Director Professor Dr Anwar H Joarder will also participate.

The organisers said the initiative was intended to begin a broader national conversation rather than conclude it. They hope to move beyond a one-off academic event and contribute to strengthening responsible, meaningful and sustainable research cultures in Bangladesh.

The roundtable forms part of ULAB’s continuing commitment to academic excellence and integrity. It seeks to encourage greater dialogue among researchers and academic institutions about the future of research and publication in Bangladesh.
