PSG edge out Bayern in a nine-goal Champions League semi-final first leg thriller
Paris Saint-Germain edged out Bayern Munich 5-4 in a remarkable Champions League semi-final first leg, letting a three-goal lead slip before doing just enough to take an advantage into the return match.
An electrifying night in Paris saw Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé both score twice in what became the highest-scoring semi-final in the competition’s history.
Bayern made the stronger start and went ahead through Harry Kane, who calmly converted a penalty. PSG responded through Kvaratskhelia, who cut inside and finished clinically, before João Neves headed the hosts in front.
The lead was short-lived as Michael Olise levelled with a powerful effort, but PSG regained control before the break when Dembélé converted from the spot following a handball by Alphonso Davies.
PSG surged further ahead early in the second half. Kvaratskhelia added his second after being set up by Achraf Hakimi, and Dembélé soon followed with another finish to make it 5-2, leaving Bayern facing a heavy defeat.
However, the German side mounted a strong response. Dayot Upamecano headed in from a Joshua Kimmich free-kick, before Luis Díaz reduced the deficit further with a composed finish after beating Marquinhos.
Bayern pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, while PSG nearly added another when Senny Mayulu struck the crossbar.
Despite the late pressure, PSG held on to secure a narrow first-leg advantage ahead of the return fixture in Munich next week. The tie remains finely poised, with a place in the Champions League final in Budapest on 30 May still up for grabs.
