Retiring kit woman honoured with giant tifo tribute
Go Ahead Eagles paid a heartfelt tribute to their long-serving kit woman, Carla Whittie, as she retired after 28 years at the club.
Supporters unveiled a giant tifo banner featuring her face ahead of the Eredivisie match against AZ Alkmaar, accompanied by the message: “Carla club icon. Thank you for everything!”
Before kick-off, the 53-year-old was presented with a certificate of appreciation on the pitch. Players also wore shirts bearing the words: “Carla, thank you.”
Although the match ended in a goalless draw, the tribute proved to be the standout moment of the evening.
Whittie joined the club in July 1998, initially as a volunteer before quickly moving into a paid role. Reflecting on her early years in a 2023 interview with the club, she said she was not always treated as part of the team.
“When I started at Go Ahead Eagles, I was not even allowed to enter the players’ lounge,” she said. “I was not included in the team photo either. Kit staff were not really seen as part of the squad at that time. Nowadays it is different.”
She added that her perspective evolved over the years. “In the early days, I sometimes sat on the bench like a supporter and took poor performances to heart. That lasted about 15 years. Now, the players are simply my colleagues.”
Whittie also expressed pride in her long service. “Within the current organisation, I am the only one who has been here this long. I do not think anyone else has been on the payroll for so many years.”
The club described her as “deeply valued by staff, players and supporters alike”.
During her time with the Eagles, Whittie witnessed several relegations and promotions, as well as the club’s Dutch Cup triumph last season and participation in European competition.
