Four students from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have been suspended as authorities discovered the students consuming alcohol and cannabis in their dormitory room. They have been suspended for two years and permanently banned from their residential hall.
This decision was made during an emergency meeting of CUET’s Students’ Discipline Committee yesterday (25 February) afternoon. Mohammad Mahbubul Alam, Director of Student Welfare and Secretary of the Discipline Committee, confirmed the expulsion to the media.
The students affected by this disciplinary action include Imtiaz Ahmed, Parvez Reza Khan, and Syed Shahriar Islam Lamun from the Civil Engineering Department (2021-22 session), and Mohammad Mahid Hossain from the Mechanical Engineering Department (2021-22 session).
On Sunday (23 February) night, the Provost and Assistant Provost carried out a raid in Room 402 of Shaheed Mohammad Shah Hall, where the students were found consuming drugs. During the raid, authorities seized 20 grams of cannabis and 500 millilitres of alcohol in two separate bottles from the students’ possession.
Following the discovery, CUET issued a notice outlining that the students would be expelled from all academic activities for two years in accordance with the university’s anti-drug policy. In addition to this, they have been permanently removed from the residential hall.
As part of the process, the Discipline Committee has issued a show-cause notice to the students, asking them to explain why further disciplinary actions should not be taken against them. They must submit a written response by 4pm on 11 March. Alternatively, the students have the option to attend a personal hearing at the committee’s meeting on 12 March at 3pm to present their side of the story regarding the disciplinary actions taken against them.
