Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur is set to observe the first martyrdom anniversary of its student Abu Sayed and ‘July Shaheed Day’ on 16 July.

To ensure foolproof security ahead of the event, the university authorities have restricted the entry of outsiders into the campus for three days, beginning Sunday evening until the morning of 16 July.

The move is part of preparations to commemorate Abu Sayed, recognised as the first martyr of last year’s anti-discrimination movement.

A notice issued by the university on Saturday night said no outsiders will be allowed on the campus from 7pm on Sunday until 9am on Wednesday to maintain security and discipline during the observance.

Only students, faculty members, officials and staff with valid ID cards will be allowed to enter the campus. The university has sought full cooperation from all concerned in ensuring the restriction is enforced effectively.

Besides, additional police personnel have been deployed to enhance security during the period.

BRU Proctor Ferdous Rahman said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of dignitaries expected to attend the July 16 event and prevent any possible breach of discipline.

Regarding the first-year students who have yet to receive ID cards, he said department heads have been instructed to help them collect temporary IDs from the Proctor’s Office.

On July 16, BRU will host a series of day-long programmes in memory of Abu Sayed. His father, Mokbul Hossain, will attend as the chief guest at the main event.

Four government advisers are scheduled to join the commemoration. They are Law Adviser Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, Education Adviser Prof Dr Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-E-Azam.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr SMA Faiz, Education Ministry Senior Secretary Siddique Zobair, and UGC Member Prof Dr Tanzimuddin Khan are also expected to attend.

BRU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali said, “Alongside the four advisers, 21 family members of martyrs will be present. The campus must remain secure and orderly throughout this important event.”
