Ducsu polls: DU revises decision for closures; classes, exams suspended only for voting day

Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin announced the decision at an emergency press conference this evening (3 September).
The Dhaka University administration has revised its earlier decision regarding academic closures during the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election.
Instead of a three-day break, classes and examinations will now remain suspended only on the election, which is scheduled for 9 September.
Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin announced the decision at an emergency press conference this evening (3 September).
He said, “All classes and examinations will remain suspended only on 9 September for the Ducsu and hall union elections. Academic activities will continue as usual on 8 and 10 September.”
Earlier on 30 August, the administration had announced a four-day closure from 7–10 September for the polls.
Following protests from Chhatra Dal and leftist student organisations, the university reduced the closure period by one day on 1 September.
Regarding the change, Jasim said, “Traditionally, classes remain closed for just one day during Ducsu elections. However, considering students’ concerns and overall security, we had earlier requested the authorities to extend the holiday, and they acted accordingly.”
“At this stage, following requests from many candidates, we informed the administration to reconsider the decision and keep only 9 September as a holiday. The administration has accepted that request,” he added.
Describing the atmosphere on campus, Jasim said, “A joyful and friendly environment is prevailing at the university ahead of the polls. I urge all students to participate in the elections to make the university’s future activities more effective and successful.”
