MIT to offer free tuition for families earning under $200,000

Starting next autumn, MIT will waive tuition for undergraduates from families earning less than $200,000 annually. Those earning below $100,000 will also receive full coverage for housing, fees, and personal expenses.

With tuition currently at $62,000 and total annual costs, including housing, nearing $86,000, the move raises the income threshold from $140,000 and aligns with efforts by top universities to make education more accessible. Families earning $100,000–$200,000 will pay on a sliding scale, capped at $24,000.

MIT has allocated $167.3 million for financial aid this year, allowing 87% of graduates to finish without debt.
