Titumir College students block Mohakhali road amid hunger strike for university status

Students of Government Titumir College staged a road blockade in front of their Mohakhali campus today (30 January), with a 7-point demand including university status.

The students also been on a hunder strike at for almost 14 hours since 5pm yesterday (29 January) under the banner of “Titumir University for State Recognition”.

The student platform Titumir Oikya outlined their seven-point demand, which includes official recognition of “Titumir University” with an academic calendar, formation of an administration, and initiation of admission activities for the 2024-25 session.

They also called for guaranteed residential facilities for all students or full financial support for housing, as well as the introduction of the two subjects — Law and Journalism — from the upcoming academic year.

Other demands include appointing qualified PhD-holding faculty members, capping student intake to enhance academic quality, and ensuring land and financial allocations for world-class research facilities.

One of the students on hunger strike, Aminul Islam, said, “So far, no one from the government has contacted us. However, the college authority has contacted us. The principal talked to us over the phone. We have told them that this hunger strike will continue until our logical demands are met.”

It is to be noted that the students of this college have been agitating for the transformation of Government Titumir College into Titumir University for the last 28 years. In the wake of the change of government on 5 August 2024, the students once again submitted their demand for the establishment of Titumir University to the president, the chief adviser, and various ministries of the state.
