Haircuts to hardcovers: Prodip Sheel’s salon library inspiring a community in Ctg

We often hear about book cafes, where people come to read books and enjoy coffee at the same time. But have you ever heard of a place where people can get a haircut while also have the opportunity to read books? Prodip Sheel from Chattogram has created such a unique example. By setting up a small library in his salon, this barber is encouraging people to read more.

Due to financial constraints, he couldn’t pursue academic studies very far. Leaving his studies, he opened a salon named Adwaita Hairdresser on KB Aman Ali Road in Chawkbazar, Chattogram.

However, his love for literature and knowledge remained alive in his heart. He set up a small library named Projjol Pathagar inside his salon, which houses around a 1,000 books. Customers who come to his salon no longer have to sit idly. Instead, they can immerse themselves in the pages of books.

This library-salon has become an attractive spot for literature lovers. For those waiting to get a haircut, it has turned into a place of tranquility instead of a boring wait. Not just the customers, but many people also flock to Prodip’s salon drawn by the lure of books. The salon has already gained recognition in the local community as a literary centre.

The barber who became an author

Prodip’s love for literature is not limited to just setting up the library. He has also developed his literary talents and authored nine books of poetry and rhymes. The titles of his books include Duronto Poth, Ognibedite Takiye Roi, Britter Aborte, Golpo Kothay Chora, Khut, Nishchoy Darabe, Porityakto Nogor, Jonmo Jonmantor.

These books, full of vivid imagery and deep emotions, reflect Prodip’s own journey of struggles, resilience, and a strong passion for knowledge. His works have not only gained popularity among his customers but have also earned critical acclaim in local literary circles. The juxtaposition of his barbering skills and literary prowess has made Adywaita Hairdresser a unique cultural hub.

A gathering spot for knowledge seekers

The library in Prodip Sheel’s salon is not just a place for reading books, it has become a sort of social gathering spot. People come here not only to get a haircut but also to gain knowledge and get acquainted with new books. Prodip’s initiative is helping people discover new books and increasing their interest in reading.

The diverse collection, including classic literature and contemporary fiction, offers something for every reader.

Dreams of expansion

Prodip dreams of expanding his library to inspire more people to read. But he faces challenges in maintaining and expanding his library. The primary hurdle is financial. While he manages to keep the library running with his earnings, there is little left for expansion. Prodip dreams of expanding the collection of his library and upgrading the facilities.

Customers and readers want donations from the government and private organisations which would go toward expanding this library. If Prodip’s salon library becomes more enriched, then more people in society will benefit from the light of knowledge. One day, this small library might grow into a larger library where people of all ages will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge.

Pradip’s efforts have had a profound impact on the local culture. The salon has become a symbol of how individual passion and community support can transform a small business into a beacon of knowledge and culture. The initiative has inspired others in the community to think creatively about how they can contribute to societal wellbeing, even in small ways.
