Nvidia’s Jensen Huang says AI is ‘creating an enormous number of jobs’
As fears grow over AI displacing workers, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang insists Americans have little to worry about. Speaking with MSNBC’s Becky Quick at the Milken Institute, Huang described AI as an “industrial-scale” generator of jobs rather than a driver of mass unemployment.
According to TechCrunch, the discussion covered many topics, but a main concern was whether AI could cause economic disruption or increase inequality. Quick asked if the rapid pace of AI change might create bigger problems than in the past.
Huang stayed positive. “AI creates jobs,” he said, adding that it could help the United States re-industrialise. He pointed out that AI depends on new factories producing essential hardware—many of which require workers and that the broader AI industry also employs many people.
He explained that automating a single task does not mean a whole job disappears. “People misunderstand the difference between a job and the tasks within it,” Huang said. Even if AI takes over one task, the wider role of the employee usually remains.
Huang criticised claims that AI will dominate humanity or destroy large sectors of the economy. His main concern is scaring people with “science fiction stories,” which could make them reject AI instead of engaging with it.
Interestingly, some of this “doomer” talk comes from the AI industry itself, with critics saying it is used to create hype for products that are not as advanced as suggested.
The long-term impact of AI on the economy is still unclear, but studies suggest up to 15% of U.S. jobs could be affected in the coming years.
