Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed “Sampriti Shikkharthi Jote” has achieved a landslide victory in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) election, winning 24 out of 26 posts.

With this result, Shibir has returned to the leadership of Cucsu after 44 years.

The results were announced by the election commission early today (16 October) at the BBA Faculty Auditorium of Chittagong University.

Among the key posts, Ibrahim Rony, the Shibir-backed candidate from the Sampriti panel, was elected vice president (VP) with 7,983 votes. The general secretary (GS) post went to Said Bin Habib, also from the same panel, who received 8,031 votes. The only exception came in the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) position, won by Ayubur Rahman Tawfiq from the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, with 7,014 votes.

In other posts, Mohammad Shawon from the Shibir panel won the sports secretary position, while Tamanna Mahbub Preeti from the Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya panel was elected assistant sports secretary.

Other winners from the Sampriti panel include:

  • Harejul Islam – literary, cultural and publication secretary
  • Jihad Hossain – assistant literary, cultural and publication secretary
  • Abdullah Al Noman – office secretary
  • Jannatul Adn Nusrat – assistant office secretary
  • Nahima Akter Deepa – women’s affairs secretary

  • Masum Billah – library and cafeteria secretary

The five executive member positions were also swept by the Samprito panel: Jannatul Ferdous Sanjida, Adnan Sharif, Akash Dash, Salman Farsi, and Sohanur Rahman.

Chief Election Commissioner Monir Uddin said, “This CUCSU election was made possible through the cooperation of the students. We are happy to have completed it successfully.”

Newly elected VP Ibrahim Rony expressed gratitude to the students, saying, “This victory belongs to the students. They have trusted us, and we are committed to fulfilling the promises we made.”

Earlier yesterday, clashes broke out between activists of the BNP’s student wing Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir amid the announcement and counting of results for the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu), hall, and senate elections.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Md Tareq Aziz of the Hathazari Circle was injured during the unrest near Gate-1 of the university.

He confirmed the matter to The Business Standard, saying he had been transferred to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital, where he received several stitches.

The last time Shibir won the Cucsu leadership was in 1981, when Jasim Uddin Sarkar became VP and Abdul Gaffar served as GS. Both were then leaders of the university’s Shibir chapter.

Since its establishment 59 years ago, Cucsu elections have been held only seven times – in 1970, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1981, 1990, and now 2025. Shibir first won in 1981, but lost the 1990 election to the All-Party Student Alliance.

After securing sweeping victories in the Ducsu and Jucsu elections earlier this year, Islami Chhatra Shibir has now achieved a landslide win in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) polls, consolidating its dominance in student politics across major universities.

In the Ducsu election, Shibir-backed candidates won 23 out of 28 posts, including vice-president and general secretary, while in Jucsu, the panel also clinched the majority of positions in the central committee.
