A Jahangirnagar University (JU) admission candidate was sentenced to seven days’ simple imprisonment today for using ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool, to cheat in two separate unit of the admission test.

The examinee was first found using ChatGPT in the ‘D’ Unit (Faculty of Biological Sciences) admission test for the 2025-2026 academic session and was later caught again while trying to cheat in the ‘A’ Unit (Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences) admission examination.

The second incident happened today during the second shift of the ‘A’ Unit admission test at around 10:25 am in Room-102 of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department. The examinee was detected using ChatGPT on his mobile phone by photographing the question paper, according to the university’s proctorial body.

The accused has been identified as Md Mahmudullah Hasan from Dimla upazila in Nilphamari district.

Earlier on December 23, he appeared in the fifth shift of the ‘D’ Unit admission test from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm at Room-401 of the Chemistry  Department. He allegedly uploaded photos of the question paper to ChatGPT to get answers and secured the 242nd position in that shift.

During today’s ‘A’ Unit test, the examinee was sitting on a back bench and secretly using his mobile phone to take photos and write answers with  ChatGPT’s help when invigilators caught him, the proctorial body said.

Acting Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, said authorities had suspected irregularities in the examinee’s ‘D’ Unit answer script and confirmed his misconduct after the second incident. “His results will be cancelled,” he added.

Proctor Prof Dr A K M Rashidul Alam said the university immediately informed the executive magistrate. “Both of his admission test answer scripts have been cancelled, and steps have been taken to bar him from appearing in any future admission tests,” he said.

Later, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate (AC Land) of Savar Upazila Abdullah Al Amin conducted a mobile court, based on evidence, and sentenced the candidate to seven days’ imprisonment.
