Dhaka University is enveloped in grief following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, with students, faculty, and staff expressing shock at the loss of a leader remembered as an uncompromising symbol of democratic struggle and national sovereignty.

Across the campus, prayer gatherings, memorial events and tributes by student organizations reflect the deep respect and admiration for her lifelong dedication to Bangladesh’s democracy and sovereignty.

Students across the university have taken to social media, posting tributes in her memory and acknowledging her lifelong dedication to democracy and resistance against authoritarianism. Various student clubs and organizations have also issued condolence messages, and the university administration has announced a series of initiatives to honor her legacy.

Special prayers (Doa Mahfil) were offered at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Zuhr prayers to seek forgiveness for the departed leader. Similar prayers were organized at all hall mosques, with students praying for Khaleda Zia’s soul and asking Allah to grant her the highest place in Jannatul Firdous.

The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over Khaleda Zia’s passing, highlighting her steadfast leadership during Bangladesh’s darkest political hours, her fight against autocracy and political persecution, and her unwavering commitment to democracy and national sovereignty.

DUCSU noted that Khaleda Zia’s leadership had guided the people of Bangladesh through turbulent times and that her contributions would remain an inspiration for future generations.

In line with the mourning, Dhaka University has declared three days of official mourning from Tuesday to Thursday. All classes and examinations scheduled for this period have been suspended, and the university flag has been lowered to half-mast.

As part of the observance, an academic seminar and other programs reflecting Khaleda Zia’s life and achievements are being planned. Special arrangements have also been made to facilitate participation in her funeral prayers at Manik Mia Avenue.

DUCSU Vice-President Abu Shadik Kayem described Khaleda Zia as a symbol of relentless struggle against fascism and hegemonic aggression, offering prayers for her eternal peace.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan expressed profound condolences, calling Khaleda Zia a lifelong servant of the nation who dedicated her life to establishing democracy and safeguarding citizens’ rights.

He noted that as Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, her tireless efforts for the welfare of the people would remain forever remembered.

“May Allah grant her Jannatul Firdous and provide strength to her bereaved family and supporters,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Besides, several student leaders highlighted Khaleda Zia’s resilience in facing political imprisonment, exile, and personal loss, praising her unwavering dedication to Bangladesh.

Her death, they said, marks the end of an era in the country’s political history and leaves a lasting legacy of courage and democratic leadership.
