IUB inaugurates 2nd Bangladesh Qualifying Round of Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition
The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted the inaugural ceremony of the 2nd Bangladesh Qualifying Round of the Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition 2025–26 on Thursday, 5 February 2026.

The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) hosted the inaugural ceremony of the 2nd Bangladesh Qualifying Round of the Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition 2025–26 on Thursday, 5 February 2026.
The event was graced by the former Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Mr Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed, as the Chief Guest.
Mr Didar A. Husain, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, IUB, attended as the Special Guest. The opening remarks were delivered by Mr Parav Naser Siddique, Executive Director of Hearth Bangladesh, who welcomed guests, judges, participants, and stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of the Stetson Competition in developing law students’ reasoning, analytical skills, and practical lawyering experience, while appreciating IUB’s consistent support in hosting international-standard competitions.
Representing IUB, Professor Dr Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, Dean of the School of Law, spoke on the development of mooting practices in Bangladesh, stressing the global impact of climate change and its particularly severe effects on Bangladesh. Professor Dr Borhan Uddin Khan, Advisor to the School of Law, noted that 30 universities from across the country are participating in this year’s qualifying round, underlining the competition’s role in building student confidence, professionalism, and practical experience.
Mr Didar A. Husain, Special Guest, emphasised the value of participating in international moot court competitions and commended the organisers, faculty, and staff for their efforts.
Chief Guest Mr Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed highlighted the environmental and economic significance of the Sundarbans, warning that rising sea levels and global warming pose a serious threat to the national heritage. He stressed the judiciary’s role in enforcing environmental justice, linking constitutional principles and environmental protection, and cited Article 18A of the Constitution as a cornerstone for ensuring environmental responsibility.
In his concluding remarks, IUB Vice Chancellor Professor Dr M. Tamim lauded the dedication and skill of the competitors, stressing that such platforms are vital for developing the next generation of lawyers equipped to tackle environmental challenges.
A total of 30 universities from across Bangladesh are participating in the competition, which is organised by Hearth Bangladesh in collaboration with IUB. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the guests, judges, and participants, reaffirming a shared commitment to nurturing future legal professionals grounded in the principles of environmental justice.
