Govt moves to launch women-run BRTC buses in capital

The government has moved to introduce women-only bus services under the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) in the capital, aiming to make public transport safer and more comfortable for female commuters. The initiative follows directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, according to an official handout released on Tuesday (4 March).

Under the proposed plan, the buses will be operated entirely by women, including drivers, conductors and helpers. Officials say the move is designed to enhance safety, encourage women’s mobility and create employment opportunities in the transport sector.

Authorities have also finalised a series of awareness slogans for the women-friendly BRTC buses, focusing on safety, empowerment and economic participation.

Some of the slogans include: “Another name for comfort, women-friendly BRTC bus,” “End fear in women’s mobility, the nation moves forward with safe buses,” and “Safe journey, faster work – economic strength in women’s hands.”

Others emphasise women’s right to safe travel and their role in national progress, such as “Safe journey is women’s right, let women-friendly buses be everyone’s commitment,” and “With women driving the wheels, build a safer Bangladesh.”

Officials hope the initiative will make daily commuting safer for women while promoting their greater participation in the workforce.
