For the first time in the country, the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has launched high-speed satellite-based Starlink internet service on moving trains on a trial basis.

As part of the trial, passengers can now access Starlink Wi-Fi internet inside trains.

The service was launched experimentally yesterday (13 March), with assistance from the Bangladesh Railway.

Initially, passengers on three trains – Parjatak Express, Upaban Express and Bonolota Express – are receiving the free Wi-Fi facility.

The initiative has been implemented under the instruction of Rehan Asif Asad, prime minister’s adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It is part of the government’s broader plan to introduce free Wi-Fi services at all airports and railway stations across the country under the direction of the prime minister.

To observe the trial operations, adviser Rehan Asif Asad visited the project site twice on 11 March.

During the visit, he said passengers will be able to easily access the Starlink internet service by scanning a QR code. “The service has been introduced on a trial basis for now and necessary steps will be taken to further improve it.

BSCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Imadur Rahman said the introduction of Starlink internet on moving trains will enhance passenger services and make railway travel more modern and convenient.

According to railway authorities, if the trial proves successful, Starlink-based internet services will gradually be introduced on other high-demand and non-stop intercity trains across the country.

Passengers will then be able to carry out activities such as freelancing, online classes and office work while travelling by train.
