Wikipedia has banned the use of artificial intelligence to write or rewrite content in its online encyclopedia, saying such tools often violate its core principles. The decision follows debate among volunteer editors, who ultimately supported the restriction.

According to The Guardian, under the new policy, AI tools like ChatGPT cannot be used to generate article content. However, two limited uses are still allowed: translation and minor copy editing. Editors may use AI to suggest basic wording improvements to their own writing, but only with careful human review to ensure accuracy and that no new unsupported information is introduced.

Concerns about AI include its tendency to produce misleading or “hallucinated” information. Jimmy Wales has previously warned that current AI systems are not reliable enough for drafting encyclopedia articles.

While AI use continues to grow across the internet, Wikipedia’s new rule emphasizes maintaining human oversight and reliable sourcing in its content.
