Jahangirnagar University organised a day-long training programme titled “Media and Information Literacy (MIL)” on 6 April 2026 to equip students with skills to navigate the digital landscape and address the spread of misinformation.
Held at the Wazed Miah Science Research Centre, the event was conducted under the initiative “Youth-focused Media and Information Literacy for an Informed Bangladesh”, bringing together students, faculty members and experts to promote critical engagement with information.
The programme was attended by Md Jamal Uddin Runu, Director of the Guidance and Counselling Centre, and Md Monwar Hossain, Director of the research centre.
Training sessions were led by faculty members Saquiba Yesmine, Ameena Islam and M Salahuddin Bhuiya.
The workshop included eight modules covering topics such as data privacy and security, the information lifecycle, research processes and the role of media literacy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. A session on responsible social media use in an AI-driven environment highlighted how artificial intelligence is reshaping news creation and consumption.
Participants also developed practical skills to identify and respond to disinformation, hate speech and misleading online content.
The initiative is supported by an international network including UNESCO, MILNetBD and the UN Electoral Project, with funding from partners such as Australian Aid, Japan, Norway, Sweden and UK International Development.
The programme concluded with an introduction to the Student Social Action Fellowship, encouraging students to apply media literacy skills within their communities.
