In an increasingly competitive job market, structured internship programmes are becoming critical gateways for students aiming to transition into the corporate world. Among them, the AKIJ Resource NextGen Internship has emerged as a sought-after opportunity, offering hands-on experience in a fast-paced business environment.

However, securing a spot in the programme is far from easy.

A multi-stage selection process

The recruitment journey begins with an online application, where candidates submit their CVs. At this stage, recruiters carefully evaluate academic performance, relevant skills, extracurricular involvement, and prior experience. A concise, well-structured one-page CV often stands out.

Shortlisted candidates then move on to an online aptitude test, which assesses logical reasoning, quantitative ability, English proficiency, and general knowledge, reflecting the foundational skills expected in a corporate setting.

The real test: assessment day

For many applicants, the most challenging phase is the day-long assessment centre. Candidates first participate in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), where they are evaluated on communication, teamwork and leadership. The ability to articulate ideas clearly while respecting others’ perspectives plays a key role in this stage.

This is followed by an Excel-based test, designed to measure practical data-handling skills and an increasingly essential competency across roles.

The final and most decisive stage involves a case study and presentation. Candidates are required to analyse a business scenario, develop solutions and present their ideas, followed by a question-and-answer session. This stage often doubles as the final interview, testing both analytical thinking and confidence under pressure.

Insights from successful candidates

Insights from IT intern Nusrat highlight the practical strategies needed to succeed in such a competitive process. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasised preparation and composure as key factors.

“I focused on keeping my basics strong, especially for the aptitude test and Excel tasks. During the FGD and case presentation, I made sure to communicate my ideas clearly and stay confident. I think what really helped me was staying calm under pressure and being genuine in how I approached problems.”

Adding to this, Kafiun Noor, Deputy Manager of HR at AKIJ Resource, emphasised that mindset plays a more critical role than perfection.

“At AKIJ Resource, we don’t just assess knowledge, we assess mindset. Candidates who succeed in the NextGen Internship are those who demonstrate structured thinking, authenticity, collaboration and a strong learning attitude. It’s not about perfect answers, but about how you think, work with others and solve real business problems.”

Inside the internship experience

Selected interns are placed across different business divisions, where they work in a structured yet demanding environment. Interns gain exposure to real-world business operations, cross-functional teamwork and corporate decision-making processes, making the experience both intensive and impactful.

Preparation remains key. Candidates are advised to practise aptitude tests, develop strong Excel skills and refine their presentation abilities. Equally important is the ability to think critically and communicate ideas with clarity.

The AKIJ Resource NextGen Internship is more than just a learning opportunity; it is a rigorous selection process designed to identify future-ready talent. For students, cracking it requires not only preparation but also the ability to perform under pressure and stand out in a competitive pool.
