DU student found dead; teacher, classmate taken into custody

Police recovered the body of a Dhaka University student from her residence today (26 April), prompting them to take two individuals into custody.

Munira Mahzabin Mimo was a student of the 2019-20 academic session at the Theatre and Performance Studies Department of the University of Dhaka and resided in Uttar Badda.

In connection with the incident, a faculty member of the department and one of her classmates have been taken into police custody for questioning.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police of DMP’s Badda Zone, Jewel Imran, told The Business Standard that the body was recovered from Uttar Badda.

“Preliminarily, it is suspected to be a case of suicide. A note was found beside the body. In this connection, a teacher of Dhaka University and one of the student’s classmates have been brought to the police station for questioning. Several other students are also present here and are being questioned,” he said.

He added, “If any evidence is found indicating that any of them instigated the student’s suicide, legal action will be taken against those responsible.”

Assistant Professor Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, chairman of the department, said she received the news at around 8am.

“In this incident, Associate Professor Sudip Chakraborty and one of her classmates have been taken into police custody,” she added.
