A celebration of cultural diversity featuring global tongues took place at BRAC University on 30 April as the BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) marked its 20th anniversary through books, poetry, drama, dance and music.

BRAC University holds intercultural dialogues and celebrates cultural traditions to gain a better understanding of the world and position itself as a leading institution of the Global South, said Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar, who attended the programme as a special guest.

Highlighting the importance of strong and diverse partnerships, he said staying relevant in the long run requires celebrating life itself.

Addressing the audience as chief guest, Country Director of British Council Bangladesh Stephen Forbes spoke on the importance of languages, explaining how they connect people and cultures.

Founder and Adviser of BIL Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed said the institute is working to ensure that talent, ability and opportunities transcend language barriers.

BRAC University Board of Trustees Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed was also present as a special guest alongside Executive Director of BRAC Institute of Educational Development Erum Mariam.

At the event, alumni shared their experiences of how BIL transformed their lives, including one who pursued a medical career in China after learning the language.

Students of Chinese, French, Spanish and other languages recited poetry and represented different nations by flying national flags.

The BIL also officially launched its Bachelor of Arts in Applied English Language Studies programme.

Three books were unveiled, including a memoir on the Residential Semester of BRAC University and two publications on English lessons for school students.

Popular theatre group Drishyapat staged the play “সক্রেটিসের জবানবন্দি”, while BRAC’s Social Empowerment and Legal Protection Programme performed a folk-theatre production. Musical band Warfaze later enthralled students with a concert.

In her closing speech, BIL Director Professor Shayla Sultana presented a comprehensive overview of the institute’s journey, achievements and future plans.
