A marathon nine-day livestream in Poland has raised more than 250 million zloty (about $69 million) for children battling cancer, shattering the previous global record for online fundraising.
The non-stop broadcast, which ran from 17–26 April, was hosted by Polish influencer Piotr Hancke, better known online as Latwogang, from his small Warsaw apartment. Viewers watched and donated in huge numbers, with peaks of around 1.4 million simultaneous viewers — also a livestream viewership high.
Funds raised will go to the Cancer Fighters Foundation, which supports children with cancer and their families. The amount raised was more than three times the previous top livestream fundraiser on record.
Alongside Hancke, the stream drew support from Polish and international celebrities, including tennis champion Iga Świątek and footballer Robert Lewandowski. At one point during the broadcast several well-known figures shaved their heads live in solidarity with cancer patients.
The format was inspired by a social media challenge: Hancke told followers he would stream continuously based on TikTok likes for the idea. The programme also featured music linked to the cause, including a track recorded by rapper Bedoes with a young cancer patient.
