George Russell wins Austrian GP as title race tightens
George Russell claimed a controlled victory at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, cutting into the championship lead of teenage frontrunner Kimi Antonelli and sharpening the 2026 Formula 1 title race.
Starting from pole at the Red Bull Ring, George Russell led from lights to flag, finishing 1.611 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third.
The result reduced Antonelli’s advantage at the top of the drivers’ standings from 50 points to 40 — the biggest single-race swing of the season so far.
Russell in control from the front
Russell made a clean getaway from pole and managed the pace confidently through the opening stint. Verstappen, recovering from a difficult qualifying session that left him starting further down the grid, charged through the field and applied pressure late on, but could not force an error.
The win marked Russell’s seventh career Formula 1 victory and his second of the 2026 campaign, underlining Mercedes’ growing competitiveness as the season heads towards its midpoint.
Antonelli, by contrast, endured a scrappy afternoon. The 18-year-old ran wide more than once in the early laps and lacked the outright speed to challenge the front two. Third place ensured valuable points, but the championship leader conceded ground for the first time in several races.
Championship picture tightens
Antonelli still leads the standings on 171 points, with Russell now second on 131. Lewis Hamilton sits third on 125, leaving three drivers separated by just 46 points with several rounds still to come.
With Mercedes showing race-winning pace on a variety of circuits, Russell’s title bid appears increasingly credible heading into the next phase of the season. Antonelli has shown maturity beyond his years, but Sunday’s race suggested the margin for error at the top is narrowing.
Verstappen’s second-place finish keeps him in the wider conversation, though he will need a strong run of results to mount a sustained challenge.
As the paddock leaves Austria, the message is clear: the 2026 Formula 1 championship is far from settled.
