More than 300 participants attended the programme, which highlighted the department’s achievements over the past 20 years while providing an opportunity for alumni and students to reconnect and exchange experiences.

The programme began with registration, followed by an inaugural session at the university’s International Conference Hall (ICH). Professor Dr Golam Rahman, founding head of the department, inaugurated the event.

Among those who addressed the gathering were Dr Abdul Kabil Khan, convener of the programme; Sakib Mridha, general secretary of the JMC Alumni Association; Dr Aftab Hossain, head of the department; Professor Dr Liza Sharmin, dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Professor Dr Mohammad Masum Iqbal, pro-vice-chancellor of Daffodil International University.

Speaking as the chief guest, Dr Md Sabur Khan, founder and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Daffodil International University, announced the launch of an alumni networking platform, Alumni 360, aimed at strengthening connections among graduates and supporting current students through mentoring and professional networking.

Professor Dr Golam Rahman said the achievements of former and current students reflected the department’s success over the past two decades, adding that the occasion celebrated not only its history but also its contribution to developing media professionals and communication practitioners.

A cake-cutting ceremony marked the department’s 20th anniversary, while alumni from different graduating batches shared their professional experiences and memories of campus life.

Sharmin Azad Shanta, senior newsroom editor at BanglaNews24 and an alumna of the department, reflected on the department’s growth from its early years in Dhanmondi to its current campus in Ashulia, describing the reunion as an opportunity to reconnect with former classmates and teachers.

The programme also featured networking sessions, an open mic, a raffle draw and cultural performances.

Dr Abdul Kabil Khan said the reunion would strengthen ties among alumni while contributing to the department’s future development. Dr Aftab Hossain noted that the department had grown from a small academic unit into a community of more than 1,000 alumni and expressed its ambition to become one of South Asia’s leading journalism schools.

The celebration concluded with the participation of alumni, current students, faculty members, members of the JMC Alumni Association and around 40 student volunteers.

Established in 2006, the department, formerly known as the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, has grown into one of Bangladesh’s leading media education institutions, producing graduates working in journalism, television, corporate communication, public relations, digital media and the creative industries.
