The US Embassy Dhaka has invited applications for the 2027-2028 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, a nine-month, non-degree scholarship programme that offers early-career Bangladeshi educators the opportunity to teach the Bengali language at higher education institutions in the United States.

Sponsored by the US Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the programme is designed for university teachers and professionals working in English language teaching and related fields, including American studies, English or American literature, and Bengali language instruction.

The Fulbright FLTA Program aims to strengthen participants’ teaching skills, improve their English language proficiency and deepen their understanding of the United States through academic coursework and cultural exchange.

During the programme, fellows typically teach Bengali language classes to American and international students, assist with up to 20 hours of language instruction each week and enrol in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in American Studies. Participants are also expected to organise cultural events, language clubs, discussion groups and community outreach activities.

To be eligible, applicants must be Bangladeshi citizens residing in Bangladesh and have no more than seven years of university-level teaching experience in English, Bengali or a related field. Applicants must hold at least a four-year bachelor’s degree from a recognised public or private university in Bangladesh and must not possess a degree from a US university or be currently enrolled in a degree programme in the United States.

Applicants must also not be subject to Section 212(e), demonstrate proficiency in English, and have either a minimum internet-based TOEFL score of 80 or an IELTS score of seven. A complete online application must be submitted in accordance with the programme guidelines.

The application package must include a completed online application form, academic transcripts and certificates from all post-secondary institutions attended, three recommendation letters submitted through the online portal by registered referees, and a valid TOEFL or IELTS score, if available.

According to the US Embassy, applicants are expected to demonstrate dependability, integrity and professionalism throughout the application process. Any material misrepresentation, including plagiarism, may result in disqualification from the programme and future US government-sponsored exchange opportunities.

Family members are not permitted to accompany participants during the fellowship.
